RoRo Cargo Terminals: Delays, Congestion and Reduced Services

Dear Valued Customer,

We wish to provide an update on the current delays impacting Roll-on-Roll-off (RoRo) Cargo Terminals around Australian ports. Due to increased findings of biosecurity contaminations, and an unprecedented number of cars on arrival, yards are congested with ships unable to discharge in a timely manner resulting in long queues as vessels wait for berth availability and available yard space to discharge cargo. 

These disruptions are leading to longer wait time as terminal operaters work to accommodate contaminated cargo without further congesting terminals. Average days delays as follows:

  • Brisbane: 3.7 days
  • Port Kembla: 7 days
  • Melbourne: 11.5 days
  • Fremantle: 3.5 days
While the need for clean cargo on import into Australia is not new, seed contaminiation continues to be the major biosecurity issue, however, mud, leaves, twigs, insects and other debris are evident. C.H. Robinson wishes to advise importers to work closely with suppliers to ensure compliance with Australian biosecurity requirements.

As a result of the delays emergency port congestion surcharges will be implemented on all inbound cargo to Australia. C.H. Robinson can not absorb these costs and will pass the additional charges through the supply chain to customers.

In addition to this, shipping lines are reducing services to the Oceania region across all trade lanes and in some cases considering blank sailings. C.H. Robinson is committed to working with our clients through this service interruption and will explore possible alternate shipping methods where suitable to keep cargo moving until such time as RoRo services return to normal operational status.
