Winter storm across U.S. Gulf Coast brings closures and delays

  • Rangs: janvier 21, 2025
  • Régions affectées: Amérique du Nord
  • Type de conseil: Météo
Winter weather has begun to impact the Houston area and Gulf Coast region of Texas as of Tuesday morning. Snow and sleet accumulations are already impacting traffic conditions and a number of shippers in the Houston area have already closed operations Tuesday. Winter storm warnings stretch across much of the U.S. Gulf Coast and continue north through Atlanta, then along the East Coast as far north as North Carolina. Road conditions and closures are expected to cause traffic delays from across the impacted region and could last through the week in the hardest hit areas. Expect some closures at shipping and receiving facilities and transportation terminals as the storm continues across the region.

TRUCKLOAD
Traffic delays from snow and ice build ups are expected in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Temporary capacity constraints are possible through the end of the week in the path of the heaviest winter weather.

LTL (LESS THAN TRUCKLOAD)

Any areas with power outages and road closures could see limited service and delays at terminals that would impact both inbound and outbound freight across the region. Any disruption in service could cause delays into next week as terminals catch up.

INTERMODAL
Rail terminals are expected to remain open. Intermodal shipments may still see some delay due to impacts on trucks handling first and last mile moves. At rail terminals where there are delays in picking up containers, chassis availability may be limited.

OCEAN
The Port of Houston is closed Tuesday due to expected weather conditions. The Ports of New Orleans and Mobile are closed Tuesday and Wednesday (January 21 and 22). As of Tuesday morning the ports of Savannah and Charleston are fully operational but both are monitoring weather conditions to possible impacts to operations Tuesday and Wednesday.

AIR
Cargo at major airports including Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta may experience some delays.
